Every day the average heart beats 100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood. The number of times a heart beats per minute, also known as pulse, varies from person to person. According to the Mayo Clinic, a normal adult pulse range for adults is 60 to 100 beats per minute. Normal heart rate depends on age, body size, heart conditions, activity level, medication use and even air temperature. Emotions and stress levels can also impact heart rate. Most importantly, exercise and improving fitness levels lowers the heart rate by making heart muscles work more efficiently. Your heart is a muscle and it strengthens through exercise. A well-trained athlete may have a resting heart rate of 40 to 60 beats per minute, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Trivia challenge for the day: strengthen your heart through a cardio workout. Join one of our fitness classes or commit to 20 – 30 minutes of exercise at the center.
