Have you heard the term “mindfulness” in the news, and wondered what all the buzz is about? Or maybe you’re curious about why more and more people are adopting mindfulness techniques as a daily practice – including Olympic athletes, professional newscasters, actresses such as Emma Watson, and even corporate meeting-goers at companies such as Google, Target, and Disney.
Although “mindfulness” might at first sound like new-agey hocus-pocus, it’s hard to argue with the scientific evidence behind it. Clinical trials have shown that mindfulness can boost your immune system, reduce stress, improve your memory, and increase your ability to overcome depression, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and a host of other challenges. Many schools are now incorporating mindfulness training to help not only students but also teachers and staff to create a more effective, less stressful learning environment.
But what exactly is mindfulness?
At its most basic, being “mindful” just means conditioning the brain to fully engage in the present moment, in a curious, nonjudgmental way. Doing so can equip your brain to maintain focus and balance – even amidst the challenges of a busy life and a demanding schedule. It’s a simple concept, but not necessarily an easy one! Most of us are accustomed to operating from a fast-paced, productivity-driven mindset, and it takes some practice to build our “mindfulness muscle.”
That’s why the Dexter Wellness Center is offering a FREE hour-long introduction to some simple mindfulness and meditation concepts on Thursday, October 6, 6:30-7:30pm in the wellness center conference room at 2810 Baker Road.
The free introduction offers a taste of the Koru mindfulness program, an evidenced-based series developed by psychiatrists at the counseling center of Duke University. The Koru program is used widely across college campuses, healthcare facilities, and wellness settings throughout the U.S. The program is non-religious and involves practical skills that anyone can put to work right away.
Those who would like to build a more comprehensive mindfulness toolset are invited to enroll in the subsequent 4-week Koru Mindfulness & Meditation workshop, held on Thursdays, October 13 through November 3, 6:30-8pm. The 4-week series covers a variety of skills and meditation techniques to cultivate mindfulness, as well as helpful resources for continued reading. Tuition for the 4-week workshop is $60, and scholarship options are available!
To register for either the free intro session OR the 4-week workshop, please reserve your spot today by calling the Dexter Wellness Center at 734-580-2500.
