Member Successfully Trains and Completes her First 5k and Feels Good About Her Health.
Before Sharon A. joined Dexter Wellness Center, she had been a member of two other fitness centers and was sporadic in her workouts. She was a business owner and had little free time.
“When I scheduled a tour of the Dexter Wellness Center I was impressed by its cleanliness, the large windows letting daylight in and views of the outside and the friendliness of the staff. I learned about the many programs, classes, training possibilities, and types of exercise that I could choose from. That certainly motivated me to join,” says Sharon
Sharon had a longtime goal of running a 5K race. When she rejoined the center in September of 2022 after the pandemic, the weather was more inclement for training outside so she decided she would train indoors with the plan to race in the spring of 2023.
“I had a fitness evaluation done at Dexter Wellness Center by Amy and she made suggestions for core and upper body exercises to go along with running the track. Jennie at the front desk had always greeted me when I came 3 times a week to work out so I often reported on the progress I was making and she encouraged me towards my goal.”
Sharon recorded her workouts on forms provided by the Wellness Center so she could keep track of her progress in distance running, machine use, body weight, and pulse measurement. By December, Sharon was up to 3.1 miles on the track and had lost six pounds. She also felt great after each exercise session.
“There were a couple of times I asked staff members questions about training for distance and asked what it was like to compete in a 5K, and they were helpful”
On April 29, 2023, Sharon ran the 3rd Annual Acquire The Dream 5K race in Lansing, Ml and was pleased with her performance. Now that training is complete, she plans to continue her fitness journey by taking group exercise classes. Plus, she’s excited to make new friendships since she has already encountered lots of people she knows in the Dexter community through her business, church, and school connections.
“I find it helpful to work towards fitness goals in a social environment which is close to home and indoors so that inclement weather doesn’t interfere. I would definitely recommend people join the Dexter Wellness Center. It is a place where people go to feel good about their physical health.”
