Massages are often associated with retreats or vacation getaways; however, massage therapy may offer benefits beyond easing muscle aches and tension, including support for your mental well-being. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, serving as a reminder to focus on personal wellness. Massage therapy could be a helpful tool to consider for relaxation and promoting a sense of calm.
The Mayo Clinic Press explains that massage therapists knead and press the muscles and ligaments at the surface of the skin to treat the arms, legs, neck, back, and shoulders where tension or discomfort may be present. Massage therapy might help blood pressure levels and circulation as well. Consulting a massage therapist can help you learn how a session can be tailored to your individual needs.
Massage therapy may help lower your heart rate, which can support reduced stress and anxiety, according to Mayo Clinic Press. A massage session could also stimulate the release of endorphins in the brain, which can help improve mood. Massage sessions can provide an opportunity to clear the mind. Massage therapists might accompany the session with calming music to create a peaceful environment, allowing you to focus on the present moment. During a session, a massage therapist may encourage you to close your eyes to support a more meditative or mindful experience. This can help limit everyday distractions such as phones, emails, and other responsibilities. You might even leave the session feeling refreshed with a renewed perspective.
